The worse part of all this is he was being held in Guantanamo for killing a US soldier at the age of 15. The US wanted to release him back to Syria, his native land where he surely would have been killed himself. But because he also had Canadian citizenship our government insisted he be sent here. Then he decides to sue Canada for 20 million dollars because he was a kid and Canada was sympathetic to the US cause. The courts just ruled he was unjustly punished and awarded him 10 million dollars and the government must issue an apology. Meanwhile the US soldier is still dead and his family probably got very little in compensation for his sacrifice.

Speer’s widow and retired American sergeant Layne Morris, who was blinded by a grenade at the Afghan compound where Khadr was captured, won a default US$134.2 million in damages against Khadr in 2015, but Canadian experts called it highly unlikely the judgment could be enforced.
