“Well, if it were half full, I wouldn’t need any more yet, would I?”

Absolutely!

It means he’s a realist. If you are filling a glass and you get to the halfway point, it is half full. If you are drinking from it and get to the halfway point, it is half empty.

The glass is always full. Some water, some air.

The glass is too big for the amount of water in it.

For a pessimist, the glass would fall off the table & break on the floor.

The optimist says half full, the pessimist says half empty, the engineer says “the glass is twice as big as it needs to be”

The optimist thinks this is the best of all possible worlds. The pessimist is afraid the optimist is right.

How much water does he drink during the night? Half a glass should be more than enough.

Whether half-empty or half-full is fully dependent on it’s previous state. Without that observation it is simply half a glass of water.
