I think, woods were more beautiful when I was a child. They were juicy green and tighter. Today leaves are already flabby early in summer and many rotten tree trunks lie on the ground. It just looks very sad and not healthy!!
I was born and raised Out West. The standard answer for any child wanting a rifle is: “First, you must be fully trained in its proper and safe operation. You must keep it unloaded and the safety on, while you have it in the house. While, we are in town, you cannot play with it in the yard. And we can all go together, when we practice at the firing range or go hunting.”The only accident, we had, caused a bullet-hole in the floor.

When sibling and I was kids we lived in town. Used to bike road this one area before got torn down to make room for new housing. Bike or walk path with trees. Where used to be my parent house and yard we did grow trees not enough to climb on. Our back yard no trees in our back yard.
I fondly remember doing my best to get lost in the “5 acre woods” when I was a child. Nowadays they don’t let children roam that widely, for spurious reasons.

Tell mom if rifles aren’t available, a sling shot will do.

You could turn around and pretend you didn’t see the backyard. Not going to happen.
