Itâs a riddle, people back then loved riddles and I believe the last like goes like this What is Humpty Dumpty. and the answer was âan eggâ. There was another that was called âthirty white horses on a pink hillâ.
Actually most of those old nursery rhymes were political satire of the day. The poor people couldnât read so travelling minstrels travelled around the country singing songs about the government of the day.
Lewis Caroll is generally credited for creating the egg character of the rhyme in âAlice Through the Looking Glassâ, where Humpty Dumpty is shown as a round egg. However, it is a very old riddle rhyme and goes back much earlier than this.

Gotta love the change in Aliceâs expression from panel 2 to panel 3 as she tries lamely to rationalize her impetuous suggestion.
Now, like Dill, may I please go home, Miss Bliss? Iâve had enough of pre-school for today!
