I have no idea why Janet persists in asking Martha to be standing by the trophy case to wait for Michael, even though she knows that Michael has already said he would not be there.
When Martha suggests that Michael might show up if Janet and Megan are not there, it’s sort of like they are setting a Michael trap and the hunters are too obvious. “Go downwind so Michael can’t pick up your scent.”
In the meantime, where is Michael?:
1. Guarding the chairs
2. Happily eating lunch with Gordon and Lawrence when he suddenly realizes that Janet and Meg are glaring at him.
3. Looking around the school trying to remember where the trophy case is.
4. Has lost track of time because he has been trying to come up with sports-related jokes to tell when he finally gets to the trophy case.
5. Hiding around the corner so he can stare at Martha and cackle with glee at how she is just standing there waiting for him, and thinking all the time that revenge is so very, very sweet and how happy he is to see Martha suffer.
6. Sharing Janet’s note to him with Gordon and Lawrence.
Because she hasn’t been able to snare him yet, and the forbidden fruit is always the most desirable. Even when you are in Jr High… if he actually bites, she will lose interest in him pretty quickly.
This is exactly why I told all my boys NOT to get involved with girls when around this age. The later the better. And I told them why….teenage hormones are nasty things running around in you and messing with your head. You will see things much clearer and saner, and the longer you wait, the better. Three listened, and one didn’t. That girl was a drama queen as it’s finest! Still is….and they did divorce after being together for 25 years.
No she doesn’t. That’s what started this in the first place, she doesn’t—and shouldn’t—have to tell you everything that happens in her love life. Stop being so persistent Janet.
Janet lived vicariously through Martha because teen boys are particular about their girls in that they have to be cute or pretty, of which Janet was neither. She is probably the ugly duckling teen who grow up to be a white swan in college and gets all the guys.

Peer pressure at its finest. Keep Mike, ditch the friends.

All Martha has to do is stand there looking cute. She’s a natural.

No matter if Mom and Dad tell her their experience and give her assurances, the teen heart knows what it wants but not why and, often, how to get it.
