Thank goodness that’s from 1989. By 2009, they’d have been shot while opening the door for being ‘threatening’ with ‘qualified immunity’ protecting the DEA/Cops
Federal law provided that, as an incentive to search out “drug dens”, local cops could keep a portion of the cash value of any property involved in the illicit trade. It did indeed prove to be a powerful incentive, one that many self-described “underfunded” local constabularies used to their considerable benefit.
In one memorable case, they busted a teenager (who personally was subject only to the juvenile-justice system, so got off relatively easily) for a stash of pot that he was keeping in the loft of his grandparents’ barn. You guessed it: The cops confiscated the entire farm, sold it at auction for the proceeds, and drove gram and gramps into bankruptcy. American justice at its finest!
I’m not minimizing the ill effects of drug addiction. It’s a serious problem. But it should be treated as a medical problem. The only thing that’s guaranteed to make it worse is criminalizing it.
When you guys put them in the car, take the hand away okay? Throw these thugs in the back of a paddy wagon. and don’t worry about them hitting their heads on the way in. Tell them Trump said to rough them up a bit.

Sortwell is a good name for a government agent. I bet his brother is a GSA auditor.
