    It is well-known that Melville’s mother had great difficulty getting young Herman to lay off the sidewalk chalk. Baths in seawater aren’t exactly comforting.

    Alice so typically makes some childish observation based on her imaginary reality, and then later utters a literary phrase like “Oh how we writers suffer”. The contradiction is part of Thompson’s beautiful style.
