Reminds me of when I was in college and National Poetry Press was printing a book of poems….you could submit a poem for “consideration”. Of course, anyone who submitted a poem got it published and the idea was that you would be so “honored” that you would would buy the book. Yeah, I did.

Schmuck is Yiddish slang for penus, not the languish one wants to hear from a six year old.

This happens in real life, too. I remember when my dad was temporarily unemployed and he got one of those pyramid scheme letters. It was along the lines of sending the writer of the letter $5 and then ask all your friends to send you $5 and the writer $5 and have them ask all their friends to do the same and the money would just pour in from all these people sending money on, etc. I was a teenager and even I could see it was an idiotic scam. I quietly asked my mom why she was allowing dad to do that and not talking him out of it and she said he was a bit down from being out of work and this would keep him busy until he found work again. (Mom was one smart cookie.) She figured he wouldn’t be out that much and it was worth the cost to perk him up again. He didn’t do it for long and did find work not long after. Sometimes you just have to allow loved ones a moment or two of stupidity on occasion, providing it’s not too expensive. $300 for an ego-book is a bit pricey.
