Don’t say “I’m you!” if you value your life.

overheard at a recent senatorial debate:

O’donnell:” where is the separation of church and state mentioned in the constitution?” (audience laughs at this idiot question from a candidate for the office of U.S. Senator; she thinks she has scored a point and smiles at them broadly)

Actually, the phrase “a wall of separation between church and state” is from Jefferson’s letter to the Danbury Baptists written in 1802. It’s not in the Constitution. The context of the quote is very interesting.

O’Donnell’s mistake was trying to argue a very academic point with an opponent who isn’t nearly as smart as he thinks he is.

It was fun drawing the Samantha costume for Edward.

John Glynn? If you’re reading today, and you guys can cut a deal with Sony, I will gladly write a “Bewitched” daily strip for AMU.

Technojunkie, we know that. However, the wording of the First Amendment is pretty clear and would be tough to interpret away: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…”

The phrase “separation of church and state** is not there, but the concept and intention clearly is.

Yeah, Techno - the second amendment doesn’t say you can have AK-47’s either, but guys like you claim it does.

The “conservative” website that lives to torment me is now calling me a plagiarist. Any good contingency lawyers read me?

“Separation of church and state” means only that the state cannot designate or endorse an official state religion. It does not mean that ‘church’ and ‘state’ can never get together to accomplish good, or that state leaders cannot mention God, or openly live according to His laws.

Shouldn’t need one Pab, the Supreme Court has repeatedly ruled in favour of parody over plagerism.

Technically, “or prohibiting the free expression” allows human sacrifice. Baal was reported to prefer first born sons of political & religious leaders. Aztec gods liked high ranking prisoners of war.

They had a recent bout with a government that they thought oppressive, & wanted to retain the ability to throw the bastards out by force if necessary, I’m constitutionally entitled to a nuke.

You can be pretty sure that Christine won’t Carry On Cruising but she might Carry On Screaming.

Pab, I’d read a Bewitched daily strip. My bedtime (fun) TiVo still records B as well as Jeannie and Cheers. All are great for relaxing at bedtime (and the bedroom TiVo has minimal memory and no saving to DVD).
