If one travels to a place where only the weather is different, nothing much is learned about the people, but that lets one concentrate on learning a good deal about the place. Of course, in any country not the US, both the people and the place offer great education.

Doesn’t work with everybody, but many travelers return with new perspectives, and we are the better for it.
Your kid reading Hiaasen books with one word titles is OK. If one brings home a two-word title Hiaasen, you better read it first. Those people are NOT like you! Fun, weird, but not like you (hopefully).

Reading a book about someone that moved to Florida is not quite the same.

“Are you really traveling”…if you go someplace else?
I think Caulfield should look up the word “travel.”

Don’t get me wrong here, I’m not saying travel is better than escaping, or vice versa, or that they’re necessarily that different from each other.
But I will say that Carl Hiaasen IS better than most writers, and different from even more. Or vice versa.
