In he penultimate panel, it sounds like she gave the signal and he ignored or didn’t see it. In the last panel, it sounds like HE gave the wrong signal. I’m confused.
Wait a minute. Maybe Janis means that she is the only one who is allowed to give the signal that it’s time to go. And that is true even if Arlo is sacked out on the couch, snoring and drooling, while Janis enjoys herself by talking endlessly with the hosts.
Personally I wouldn’t have admitted to the drooling but I think she’s saying that when she’s past the tired stage and has actually fallen asleep, he’s missed all the subtle signals that it’s time to leave.
Some time before they departed, Janis gave the secret signal to Arlo that it was time to leave. Arlo either missed the signal or signals or ignored them. Janis fell asleep and started to snore and drool. At that point, Arlo realized it was time to leave.
I’ve been to a daytime party where I was falling asleep in the early stages of a cold. I was determined to stick it out through the gift exchange, then somehow drive home.

Who was snoring? Who was drooling?

I don’t get this one, either, and, ordinarily, I get all of Jimmy’s gags.

Arlo DIDN’t catch her “signals” and then she fell asleep, which he finally noticed.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Was Arlo paying too much attention (snorting and drooling) to someone and ignoring Janis’ signals?
