Cul de Sac by Richard Thompson for November 20, 2010
Transcript:
Alice: Mom, are we going to Grandma's house this year for Thanksgiving? Mom: Probably not, Alice. We've got a coupon for Thanksgiving dinner at a pretty nice restaurant so I think we'll all be going there. How does that sound? Alice: Can I wear my pretty party dress with the hat so people will see me? I hate going to restaurants where people can see me eating. I always swallow wrong. Mom: Who said what now?

Com’mon Mom, that’s an easy one…
hlagallah about 14 years ago
geez, Mom. I’ve only been reading this one since Halloween and I know the answer to that question.
COWBOY7 about 14 years ago
I agree, Marg & Hlagallah. Mom’s not thinking clearly right now!

Lessee. I don’t think Petey wants to wear a party dress; and we know he can be a tad introverted. So…. C’mon, Mom! You can do this!

I can’t picture Petey in a dress.

Love that overlapping dialogue. “Who said what,” indeed.

I understand where Mom is coming from - although the sentences are separated in the panel, when this happens in real life (like with my kids), it comes out more like “Can I I hate wear going my to pretty restaurants party where dress people…”

Sigh, wish i had someplace to go.

Who wants to go to a restaurant? There’s no leftover turkey for sandwiches that way.

Wait, what is Mom working on?
fritzoid Premium Member about 14 years ago
JHSayers, Richard Thompson has commented that, when he draws Madeline (Mom), he likes to have her busy doing SOMETHING, but something unidentifiable. That’s the way his OWN Mom always seemed to HIM when he was Alice and Petey’s age…
A note re yesterday’s comments: The plug from Pastis was very nice, and no doubt will attract new readers to “Cul de Sac”. But if “CdS” gets TOO popular, look for Pastis to start having appearances by Alice and Petey in “Pears Before Swine”, smoking and committing major felonies…

Our group is doing recreation of a 10th century wedding feast. I painted a wall hanging depicting how it would have looked (in the style of the Bayeux tapestry). Our feast will have about 40 dining participants, which is like a Thanksgiving party - with everyone dressed in early Norse or AngloSaxon clothes. And I roast turkey breasts year round, just because I like it.

I certainly hope Grandma is invited to go out to dinner with the Otterloops.

cleo who wants to go to a restaurant on Thanksgiving? The one who has to do all the cooking and clean up afterwards, that’s who! :-)
cleokaya about 14 years ago
Dry that would be me doing half the cooking and all of the dishes.

Mark55025, if you can make it to Dayton, OH and don’t mind a lot of noise and kids, you can join us for Thanksgiving.

I’m positive Madeline is working on my watch. That’s what it looked like the last time I tried to work on it.
Oh, and if you multiply their simultaneous chatter by 3, you will know what it sounded like in my family when I was growing up.

My thoughts too, DirtyDragon … Grandma can take leftovers home to Big Shirley!

Nice touch, showing Mom with tools in her hand instead of sewing or cooking implements. Kids need to see that tools are not a male-only thing.

Mark55025, if you can’t make it to Dayton, maybe you can help a local charity serve Thanksgiving dinner to those who wouldn’t otherwise have a meal to eat, let alone a place to go. Hope you find some good company.
