There’s an old movie scene I remember. I think it’s from The Flying Tigers, 1942, but wouldn’t swear to it. A doctor and a nurse are caring for an injured pilot, who’s lying on an examination table. The doctor is smoking, the nurse is smoking, and the patient is smoking.
Out of boredom, I turned on Netflix last night and chose “Mad Men”. I guess it takes place in the fifties, and EVERYONE smokes continually, everywhere. Especially in restaurants.
Before the full cigarette ban for restaurants here in Florida, I took a date to a restaurant and asked for a seat in a non-smoking area. We were seated, and the couple next to us started smoking. I called the waitress over and asked how this could be. She said, “This is an optional smoking or non smoking area.” I guess that meant we were allowed not to smoke there. I decided to be polite, not sarcastic, and we got up and left.
Some time back in a magazine article, someone described being in cancer treatment, and one patient breathing through a hole in his throat was smoking through it! (Thankful I never got into that habit!)
I may have written this before: I had been smoking a pipe for more than 40 years when, in 1993, when my daughter came home from a nursing class and said, “Dad, we had this incredible lecture today on oral cancers! Let me show you some neat pictures!” I set my warm pipe down and never picked any of them up again!

What gets me is people may need oxygen to carry with them or a tank at home, but will take it off then light up a smoke. dumber than a box of rocks!!!
