Ietaftp.

Center-less fried dough…I like that.

♫ Well, I went around the corner and I went around the block

And I walked right into a doughnut shop

I picked up a doughnut right out of the grease

And I handed the lady a 5-cent piece ♫

♫ Well, she looked at the nickel and she looked at me

And she said: “This nickel’s no good to me.”

“There’s a hole in the middle and it goes right through”

Said I: “There’s a hole in your doughnut, too!” ♫

♫ Jump in the breadbox, you crumb! ♫

When next it is seen it will no longer be a doughnut.

At least Sophie is an honest thief

Is anybody else old enough to remember the lady in the store window, frying doughnuts and scooping them up with a stick through the middle? She’d hang them up to cool, and you could buy really fresh treats?

I remember an old bus in Elizabeth, NJ that was used as a donut shop. He closed at about 8 PM and I would go and buy a dozen at about 7:45. He used to give me all that was left.

And judging from that grin, looks like it was worth it to her!

Love the halfway guilty look in panel two. It was so good she couldn’t muster a wholly guilty look. Or should I say “hole-y”? :)

The donut looked so lonely… and no one was around to keep it company… so….

There was local bakery (alas it burned down and they never re-built) that used to sell the doughnut ‘holes’. One of the big bosses used to stop and buy a big bag of them on his way to work and put them in the break room.

Mmm—donuts …
