Is Broomie being critical, or envious? Irwin’s motives, I’m sure, are less conflicted than hers….

I LOVE the background in this strip. It appears that the couch and the TV are floating in the stars

The shows like “Law and Order” (original version) that are cast and filmed in New York rather than Hollywood are somewhat better in this regard (not a lot, but some). They draw from a talent pool that primarily wants to work on the stage rather than in film, and they look more like “real people” (they also get better actors, even in the smallest roles).

The British and European shows are much better about using actors who look like real people.

For starters, see -Helen Mirren in Prime Suspect

-Krister Henriksson and Johanna Sällström in the Wallander series (in Swedish…it is much better than the British series)

-Trond Espen Seim as Varg Veum (Norwegian)

I’d quibble over Helen Mirren. She can be “Hollywood Gorgeous” when need be, and considering her age she’s still totally HOT.

I don’t know either of the other actors you’ve mentioned, ellisaana, but I agree with you in principle. I see a fair number of European movies, and generally speaking the performers are chosen for their acting ability rather than their looks (not to say that they’re hideous, of course; they just look like people you’d see on the street).

I can’t remember the name of the actor who played the male lead in the Swedish films of the “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” books; he’s not ugly, but he’s not particularly “hunky”. For the Hollywood remakes they’ve cast Daniel Craig, who looks like the Swedish guy’s taller, handsomer, younger brother…

In Hollywood when they want someone who’s “plain”, it’s still usually someone who’d turn heads in real life, just with frumpy clothes and bad hair.

You know they’ve gone too far when they start giving injections to raisins to turn them back into grapes.
