Captain Eddie: Every time you test yaw'r flow-thru hull theory on my boat, Mike, it sinks... Mike: Well, that can only mean one thing, Eddie... we just didn't go far enough with it! Captain Eddie: Or... maybe yaw'r theory is a bunch o' bull... Mike: Naw... I just need to drill a few more holes.

Mikeâs definitely a Republican. Eddie, donât cave in!
nibor6 about 14 years ago
Trouble is ,heâs drilling the holes from the wrong side. He needs to drill the holes to let the water out, not in. Geez you Northern Hemispherians just dont understand logic like usân Southern hemispherians!!
dataweaver about 14 years ago
@pouncingtiger: actually, I was thinking just the opposite.

In Canada, Mike would have a good chance at getting a government grant.

sayhowURfeelingB4URgone: Must keep in mind too, that it is the rich, who creates jobs. Not the poor, (nor the government, for that matter). what a load of crap. what did the millionaires and billionaires do with the tax cuts they got? create jobs? thatâs why weâve lost several million jobs in this decade. the government is one of the biggest employers. as one of the top three weapons dealers, if that doesnât create jobs. being in the protection business creates jobs. also look at all the mercenaries, err contractors, at work in iraq and afghanistan. not to mention two or three carrier groups in the persian gulf or the med.

Proper test of Mikeâs work would be to secure him to the boat for the next âtrial runâ. It is when the theorist is REQUIRED to stand behind his work that the ârubber meets the roadâ!
I hope that Mike is not a âMouth Breatherâ at that point.
pdchapin about 14 years ago
Sounds like trickle-down theory to me as in the water that splashes into the boat will trickle down through the holes and back into the ocean. We all know how well the trickle-down theory has worked in the past.
migukpabo about 14 years ago
Wileyâs cartoons must have a political Rorschach test effect on some people. Iâve thought this before, but today clinches it. A little bit of suggestion and people immediately âseeâ whatever political slant they are looking for.
gjsjr41 about 14 years ago
I think you may be onto something, nibor6, It must make a difference on which side you drill the holes. Makes sense to me. lol

He needs to get a Plugger to work on his boat!

I think Mikeâs theory would work if he just had a bigger boat!
Tuner38 about 14 years ago
Just keep doing the same dumb thing ( like spending money you donât have ) and expect all you have to do is spend more and the analogy works. Youâre sunk.
steverinoCT about 14 years ago
@migukpaboâ I think youâve nailed it.
Wildcard24365 about 14 years ago
Ah, well Mike is clearly one of those liberals⊠heâs not making the holes big enough.
Drill, baby, drill!

I think you will find that the government IS in fact producing value - they actually MAKE the money, the real thing, not Big Business, which merely moves it around - there is only as much money in circulation as the Central Bank (or Mint or whatever your particular country uses) issues - nothing more. So in fact, the only money the government has is was it gives to us and asks for back in taxes.
And as for tax cuts for the rich, well, if you are rich, it is a nice thing, but history shows that trickle-down economics doesnât actually work, it is a flawed theory, which is why once Bush Senior decided to run for office, the war word was âIts the ECONOMY, stupid!â - because Reaganomics failed and the message had to that he had a fix for things - to keep hitting the same failed toy with a hammer wonât fix it, it will simply make it more intractably broken.
Does that mean we should heavily tax the rich? No, not really, but since there are so many loopholes now that the rich barely pay anything near their share of taxes, perhaps we should reconsider how to fix the system altogether - flat tax has been mooted in the past, and there are other ideas that might work. Either way, more of the same is not the answer, and it was bone headed in the first place to cut taxes during a war. That, too, is economy 101 - donât cut taxes when you need them the most - during wars and national crisesâŠ..

(This should be goodâŠ)
Gets out popcorn
On topic, comic is amusingly open-ended. If we are going with politics, then it reminds me of the government bailouts. Just drill a few more holes and we will keep on sinking⊠Letâs not stop spending or anything.
Anyone remember The Simpsons episode where they dig themselves into an unclimbable pit? âWeâll dig our way out!!!â No, no, dig UP, stupid!â Classic.

I may be wrong, of course, but I think Iâm the only member of our little debating society who is actually a professional economist, nearing the end of a long and (I think) quite successful career.
Iâve heard âEconomics 101â thrown back and forth like a football, usually by people who have come up with half of a thought, and think it qualifies them to lecture others with complete confidence about How It All Works. (Never mind that even a room full of Nobel-laureate economists wouldnât be able to come to a consensus about some things.)
This is all giving me a case of the pip, so Iâve decided to keep my own counsel and not keep putting myself into the middle of a dogfight â an expert opinion wonât be missed anyway. I only ask you, please, not to use the word âeconomicsâ: youâre entitled to have your views, and to share them if you feel you must, but youâre not entitled to give them the name of credentials that they havenât earned.

@sayhowURfeelingB4URgone âMust keep in mind too, that it is⊠Not the poor, (nor the government, for that matter) [who create jobs]â
And yet every election cycle, like clockwork, every republicanâs campaign focused on all the jobs they were going to create once in office.

âWe just didnât go far enough with it!â
Iâve seen that mentality in action. On Wall Street, in religion, in sports, in my own office. People think that if something doesnât work, they just have to take even more extreme length and, miraculously, it will work. The results are always the same: disaster, fiasco, financial ruin. So hereâs an interesting thought to humanity as a whole (not just politicos or execs or what have you): if it doesnât work the first time, go back and see what went wrong. Learn from your mistakes instead of repeating them. But since I know that will never happen, Iâll just sit here and fantasize about pushing the Big Red Button and putting a lasting end to stupidity.

A rising tide lifts all boats. Unless there are holes in your fundamental theory of what it takes to float a boat. The fundamental theories of both sides of the political debate have holes big enough, through which, to throw a boat. I donât have the credentials to explain how it seems obvious that the current economic system is all just a Ponzi scheme, so I just try to keep my head above water while I try to hold up my end of the boat.
Soâs your Rorschach.

2 morons were up on ladders, nailing up siding. 1 moron kept pulling nails out of his belt pouch, looking at them, and throwing every other one away.
âWhy you doinâ that?â the other one asked.
âHeads are on the wrong end,â the 1st one replied.
âWhy, you dope, those are for the other side of the house!â
I knew a fellow like thatâhe saved those nails in a tin can for the other sideâbut somehow it got turned around in handling, so the nails were all uselessâŠ

One reason that reducing the tax rates on the rich may increase income is that the rich, who can afford to find and use tax shelters and loopholes, may not try so hard if they get to keep 70% rather than 50% of what they make on the top endâŠ
kershawfamily about 14 years ago
@sayhow Have you noticed that the rich didnât use their tax cuts to create jobs, as planned, but to line their pockets? At least if theyâre appropiately taxed, theyâll be pulling their weight.
Ernest Lemmingway about 14 years ago
SCAATY_423, I donât think you understood what I meant by Big Red ButtonâŠor maybe you did. âMake it all better.â What I meant was the mythical button said to be in the Oval Office that would launch a nuclear attack, instigating the total annihilation of all life on Earth. Which, IMO, would make things all better. And yes, Iâm aware thatâs a nihilistic, unhealthy attitude. But when did I ever say I was healthy?

For me this cartoon epitomizes the way in which eBayâs chief headless turkey, John Donahoe, is running the eBay Marketplace into the ground.
And, undoubtedly the chief headless turkey intends to keep drilling more holes in the rusting old eBay hulk.
