At this point Jacob learns that he is only a cog in the mechanism and that mechanism is perfectly capable of working with or without him. It turns out that with absence of flak means that he is just along for the ride like the rest of Endtown.

I’m going out on a limb and guessing that Jacob knew he wasn’t the top-cog, but he clearly didn’t expect to be over-ruled at this point. Time for the next level in Endtown Administration to speak up, although we may see no more than the Panda Lawyer Allgood did at the end of the Milk Trial: just a voice coming out of a box: http://www.gocomics.com/endtown/2013/06/25

So, the rats answer to a higher authority—the Endtown Charter.

Ah! This was the catalyst I was looking for. Jacob’s conspirator is getting nervous, and nerves equal desperation. But in that state, he/she/they are forgetting that NO ONE escapes a dirty deal unscathed.

Jacob’s in an undoubtedly rough spot right now though. I somehow doubt he’s going to stay in power much longer. That doesn’t mean he isn’t going to excrement in his oppositions’s cornflakes though. With control over the rats lost, Jacob is going to use his connections to back-stab in his own way.

First of all, he knows who benefits/wants to see this whole mess resolved. (If not willingly, then out of desperation.) Secondly, he obviously knows something of the exterior colonies. And third, he has the connections to spring an escape if that’s what it takes.

If I where to guess Arron’s tactics, this is a good chance to bring back a very different Flask as well. Let us suppose a return to Endtown with reinforcements. Even if you secure that, a genuinely successful requires deep insider knowledge of the place’s deepest inner workings. We’re talking a down right impressive level beyond the rats knowledge. I don’t know anyone beyond flask, Marx or the Oracle who remotely possess that.

My point is “once again” we need an OUTSIDE source here who isn’t spoiled by an isolated existence. It’s time for some fresh blood that won’t put up with bullshit. Or as my dad once said, can say “stop it!” and make those words stick.

The expression on Jacob’s face in the third panel clearly illustrates his surprise and displeasure at having the situation taken out of his hands.

Philo certainly didn’t expect a death sentence. Now we wait and see if there’s a showdown regarding Endtown authority and whether Philo is killed or smuggled out of Endtown to fend for himself. He’d probably choose to take his chances topside over facing certain death.

There were hints at it before and this pretty much cinches it. Jacob isn’t really in control anymore. There’s been cannibalism, rioting, and a massacre of nearly an entire race of mutants under his administration. So he’s probably being nudged out of the way while they take control.

“Thorough review of the evidence”? WHAT EVIDENCE?!

Was Freeman listening in on the conversation? Most likely. Why wouldn’t there be cameras in the storage rooms? So Philo’s confession was all that was needed for Freeman to make his move. After all, he was next inline for power after the collapse of the High Council after the Milk Trial. If not for Aaron Marx and his dimensionometer…

By going over Jacob’s head with this sentencing, I’d say it’s pretty clear who the “concerned citizens” really are…

    THOSE DIRTY RATS!!!

I know it’s nitpicking, but meat is hung, whereas people are hanged. Other than that, I wonder how a public execution will affect the Endtown community at this point.

Someone wants to silence the Fox permanently, and set an example in the process. Velda should really come forward and mention what she witnessed with Cooper. Or is she the administrative connection?

What are the odds that whoever was feeding information to Cooper is the one that typed up the orders Freeman is reading from? We still haven’t seen the “Endtown administrative offices,” so what other mutants work with Jake and have access to his stationery?

a bit off-topic here. Did anyone else watch The Crossing last night? Without spoiling I can say it involves people trying to survive something Really Bad; and also from apparent oppression by an evil organization named Apex. Hmm.

Oops. You really gotta hate those unintended consequences. Oh, by the way, just who were the “reviewers”. Bureaucracy can be such a pain. I’d bet dollars to donuts Jake didn’t even know there were “reviewers”. That “boss” remark is looming larger by the minute… ;-)

    Burn down the disco

    Hang the blessed DJ

Because the music that they constantly play

It says nothing to me about my life

    Hang the blessed DJ

Because the music they constantly play

On the Leeds side-streets that you slip down

The provincial towns you jog ’round

Hang the DJ, hang the DJ, hang the DJ

Wait. “Destabilizing the colony.” Isn’t that how Jacob got where he is right now? Didn’t his planning cause the Milk trial and the riot that got rats killed, and Allgood hanged? Marx may have helped, but Jacob did it. Uh, oh, Jacob.

There is a collection of security rats living somewhere. Not down in Endtown. They have to be living somewhere, though. What if, during the long build of Endtown, the designers saw the need for a security body that existed only to protect and serve the thing that is Endtown? A group like…the rats. They do not serve the people who “run” Endtown. They’d have their own rules. And if needed, have final authority to act to keep Endtown intact. So far, they’ve appeared to follow Jacob’s orders, but only because those orders agree with rat directives.
