Parenting is a long-term / big picture investment. Most kids won’t truly appreciate what their parents did for them until they are adults, so parents should not get caught up in their short-term reaction.
Well I was the disciplinarian and was not the favored parent and now my boys are grown, and one is a dad, it is the same old story. They prefer their dad because he is more laidback and “cool” about stuff. If I remember, Mike will continue to favor his dad while Liz will continue to favor Elly. Reading this, it looks like it is gender related. One gender relates to the same gender child better than the other? I certainly could never understand my boys and presume that my husband does and he went easy on them than I ever did.
Michael was in the wrong here. The punishment was reading and he couldn’t even do that for two weeks. Hell, Elly didn’t even last two weeks. According to this comic, she caved after a week.
Unfairness can eventually be forgiven when one becomes mature enough to realize that parents are only human. A bit of hypocrisy can eventually be overlooked. But favoritism toward one sibling makes for long lasting bitterness and resentment – especially when that favoritism continues on until adulthood and is even inflicted on one’s children.

“This past week”? Does Elly mean that the 2 week punishment that lasted in our time for 3 weeks only really lasted for 1 week in Elly time?
