On a different thread: apteryx shape reminds me very strongly of an old whimsy: a bird shaped toy with a long beak that was mounted on the rim of a glass and repeatedly dipped its beak in the water. Fascinating to watch for a time. Haven’t seen one of those ‘toys’ in ages.
This reminds me of a gag from the old Odd Couple TV show (the 70s version). Felix finds Oscar asleep in bed under a pile of dirty clothes and begins shaking him to try to wake him up, only to have Oscar’s head emerge from the opposite end of the pile.
