It’s a holdover from the days of the Bubonic Plague. Sneezing signalled the start of the onset of the disease. The complete phrase was “May God bless you”, in an attempt to invoke God’s protection on the person sneezing.
There was this belief that you soul left your body when you sneezed. So to protect you from the devil or other bad influences sneaking in during that time, one called on God’s blessing on you. When you think about it, as sneezing is often the sign of the onset of an illness, it was quite logical for superstitious people with little medical knowledge.
She should teach him to sneeze in the crook of his arm also. Sneezing out in the open is a good way to share your virus with others. Sneezing in your hand then touching a door or other surface is the other way.
