She did him a big favor. She could have gone on letting the boys think otherwise and let them keep teasing Jason. Maybe it didn’t have to be done in class, while she was giving a report. Maybe she didn’t have to yell it so loud. But, hey, you take what you can get.

I must have grown up in the wrong town (Brooklyn) at the wrong time (1950’s), but it was possible to have a friends who were girls. We played with girls all the time. Sure, there were games that only boys played or only girls played, but there was a lot of overlap.
