I think this may be an example of what I don’t like about New Nancy. It appears that she is angrily demanding an unusual order. Old Nancy would have calmly asked for it, not as a challenge, but because she thinks it’s a great combination.
I’ve never read Nancy before, but after Olivia started drawing it, it has actually become one of my regulars! It’s really rare to see a classic news paper comic that’s not stuck in the boomer age, and actual deliver funny content that’s more connected to contemporary issues.
I really wish that all those nagging comments that want the old strip back to shut it – Olivias’ doing something great here!
Cute…. but nauseating as well. Mango and Rocky Road swirled together?!?!?! That does not sound appealing (Blech!). :)
If Nancy really wanted to show some unique interests and tastes…. I just saw a video about a place that makes ketchup gelato (another big “Blech!” from me… not fond of ketchup) and I actually was in a shop that had onion ice cream once (I tried it, and it was strange but somewhat “ok”).
I like the new Nancy! She’s not stagnant any more, she has opportunities and a future and a personality other than a spin off of lil dot or any other ancient little girl. Teething aside, I hope Nancy gets to grow some! Maybe she will join the robotics club? Maybe she gets really into programming? Maybe she finds a knack for sculpture, who knows?
Hmm. Rocky Road is a pretty good description of how I feel about this right now. This new Nancy started off so strong, and I’m still totally on board (after not even knowing of the comic during Gilchrist’s run), and it definitely feels way more Bushmiller than it has in decades.
But I think MJ hit the nail on the head here – despite great premise and jokes, there’s something off about Nancy’s demeanor lately. She’s sometimes bratty, but a lot of the time she’s just naive, or she just wants to cause mischief. These last few strips, she’s felt almost vindictive and toxic. It ends up kind of killing the execution – being destructively rude is funny when it didn’t happen recently, or with proper pacing. But when it’s the default tone, it just ends up a little more annoying than anything. Hope Jaimes tones down the behavior a bit – I want the gag to shine through again, because with Bushmiller a lot of the time the gag was almost the main character itself.

I’m sure Nancy will be regretting that ice cream, like cathy.

Was Suggo with the other girl at the time when Nancy was getting ice cream?

Basic premise is OK, art is awkward at best. I’m with MJ; I don’t like Nancy’s expression in the last panel…

The comical part (no pun intended) is that I have been getting far more laughs and entertainment from the comments section than the actual comic!

Nancy needs a Whirl-A-Way machine.
