I think the joke is based on the saying “there is one way to find out.” I suspect the previous conversation went something like “Do you think a watermelon would make a good helemt? It is about the size of my head.” " I don’t think so." “Well, there is one way to find out!” Thus implying that testing the exact scenario is the only way to determine answers to questions.
Still doesn’t make much sense to me. It looks like one kid is going to jump off the roof with a watermelon rind as a helmet and the other with no helmet. Why? Tony could have done better making it clear, or at least putting an explanation below the panel.
The future Darwin Award winner is testing the protection that a watermelon rind will provide when jumping off a roof. The second kid is there trying to talk him down.He should let him jump before he’s old enough to bred and pass on the “stupid gene”.

Sadly, this one seems beyond my understanding. Even when I read the comments. If anyone could explain it to me, I would be appreciative.

Oh, well – Tony’s given me a lot of laughs over the years, since way before GoComics came along. So I don’t get one … Big whoop!
