Our lab mix, Buck, was found on the streets of North Dallas in a dog fighting area. He was 6 weeks old – covered in fleas, had fireworks tied to him, poisoned and had parvo. Our housemate brought him home. My husband took him to the vet (he wanted him very much) and the vet said he wouldn’t last the month. My husband had a lot of dog experience and proved them wrong. He took his vacation time and spent the next 2 weeks with that little puppy and fed him people food by hand (that little guy wouldn’t touch dog food for almost 2 years) and slept with him and gave him his medications.
It is now 13 years later and that dog hasn’t been sick since. He grew tall and beautiful. Sweet natured and mellow. And he loved other animals so much when I got pet bunnies he would give them a bath and let them hop all over him. He is the goodest boy. And still can chase a squirrel. He is still scared of popping noises like fireworks and gunfire (we now live in a rural area that has hunting) but he is much more mellow around other people.
I understand that scared puppy. I wish we could adopt him, too.

Close the door and walk away. That usually does the trick.

Always nice to have a pup like Sophie when you’re fostering.

Pretty much everyone I know, including and especially my wife, is a little scary before they’ve had coffee.

I’m trying to imagine what the poor little pup must be feeling. He must be terrified of all humans, never having had a reason to trust any.
