My older daughter is reading “The Lord of the Rings” for her summer reading. I pulled out my old copy (which is still in mint condition, even though I’ve read it multiple times) for her to borrow. My younger daughter’s is “A Raisin In the Sun”.
Just tell me I HAVE to read a book and I will refuse to read it. Hardwired into my brain. It got me in trouble in school even though I am an avid reader.
I read because I love to. When I was little, even before kindergarden, my parents had this green tin-type box sort of, with a window that showed a worksheet. You’d roll it up to the next one when done. This would have been 63-64ish
I actually loved it. And they read to me a lot, both parents and my granny. I was never restricted to the kid section in the local library either, wonderful ladies they were :) I read my way through the non-fiction section, starting at 0 and picking up books that looked interesting.
Not to mention when I had nothing to read, I’d sit down with one of the World Books.. remember those? We had the whole set, along with the yearly ones.. wonder whatever happened to it!
our school never had a summer reading list, but our local library had a summer reading club, every summer I’d go to the librarian and explain that I’d already read all the books on their list for my own enjoyment and they’d let me make a list of my own to replace the official list.

I read all the time. When I was a kid, I was not given a “reading list”, no one was in our school.

Nope, no reading lists for us. Just a wonderful library.
