Except the myth is not about a slingshot, it’s about a sling – a much more effective (if harder to master) weapon – and one that actually existed at the time of the fable. A modern equivalent would be “bringing a derringer to a sniper-rifle fight”.
He also brought a spear. And David also brought a staff (Which is why Goliath asked David if Goliath was a dog that David brought a stick to fight him with, ignoring the sling entirely.)
