Who hasn’t played with their food at some point in their lives? I certainly did when I was a kid. But then again one evening when my wife, daughter and I wee eating at a restaurant that featured a buffet. One of the food items offered were frog legs. I totally creeped the daughter when I grabbed a couple of them and danced the can-can on the table cloth.
When people make mistakes in usage often enough, the errors become accepted usage. The dictionaries reflect accepted usage . . . but that don’t make it RIGHT!!!!

No no—you use meatballs for lawn bowling—you use waffles for curling.
