Does anyone else wonder if Walt is going to move into the Old Comics Home…that this may be a way to gently ease him out without letting him die? Maybe have his wife there waiting as a surprise. I would really hate to see Walt actually die (yes I know he’s just a comic character)….but if he does go there to live, surely the strip could go on and there could be occasional visits to the Old Comics Home, which is always a hoot. This caliber of the true old fashioned comic is almost completely gone….
I’ve always felt the best way for a “real-time” comic strip to handle a situation like Walt’s is to allow them to die but then periodically have “flashback” arcs where we see what the character did in the past. New story lines, but set in an earlier time. They could perhaps be introduced by a current character in the nature of a memory. “I remember about 30 years ago when Walt….”. That way a strip could be true to it’s claim of reflecting the passage of time without really loosing a popular character.

I hope Annie announces that she’s coming out of retirement.

I dread Walt’s passing as well, and hope that some reasonable way to keep him around occasionally, other than reruns of previous scripts.
