The elderly gentleman sounds like either a retired ’realtor, lawyer or carsalesperson(none of which I trust—over 50 per of what they say is ’pure bilgewater) ! ! ! !
my family had a very similar experience when we went to look at some houses. we found one that would work really well, and were forced to make a decision on it that night! of course we said yes! we had prayed for God to make it easy to pick the right house, and he sure made it so!
I bought one home sight unseen. I knew the seller and her ex-husband, who was a contractor. He’d originally built the house for his wife and family. I also knew his reputation as an excellent builder and knew he wouldn’t have stinted on the construction. They’d divorced, the kids had grown up and gone, and the seller wanted to move to California.
We did everything over the telephone, and through a mortgage broker. My wife and I never set foot in the house until we did the walk through with the home inspectors.
That was over 35 years ago. My ex-wife still lives there, and hasn’t ( to the best of my knowledge ) had to do any major repairs. They don’t build homes like that anymore.
We actually bought a house in Canada while we were living in England. Saw it on the Internet and asked a daughter to check it out for us. She liked it and so did we.
When my parents were looking for a house…the one they viewed my mother didn’t like much and as they were driving away out of the neighborhood; she spotted a Baptist church around the corner from it….of course they brought the house! :-D
Always make your offer contingent on inspection. Turned down an otherwise perfect house because inspection showed it had aluminum wiring. It burned down the next year because an “upgraded” wall switch not made for aluminum oxidized and heated up where the copper and aluminum met.

If you know a good thing when you see it, move on it. That’s my advice.

In this case, if they both cannot agree right here and right now that this is the place, then let it go and go home!

In some markets (i.e., Houston), it is truly like that. Other markets (i.e.,central Maine), not so much.

It looks like my comment from today disappeared, so I guess someone decided to live up to their threat to target my comment:.
