The way this joke plays out, it’s as if Elizabeth is very aware that the mother prefers the children to be at school rather than at home with her. We have seen Elizabeth play the mommy part before with her dolls, and almost always it is a slam to Elly’s parenting. Most times Elly sees her play and gets sad, but this time it’s Georgia and we get a different reaction than sadness.
My mom said I did this kind of thing a lot when I was little, except with dolls, not with little toys with a doll house. I had a complete toy kitchen with a dining table and dinnerware, so I sat my dolls around the table, talked to them, went around the kitchen to make the dolls something. My boys were different – they only liked to smash things and race toy cars. Girls are language oriented so they tend to talk a lot. They listen to conversations and repeat the conversations during their play time. My grandson is the same as his father and uncle. I had hope for him to be more balanced but nope.
It is a common joke in the US that ALL parents are relieved once school starts; in part, this is because so many two-parent households in the US are also two-job households, and childcare during summer breaks from school can be challenging. In the US, unlike Europe, getting paid or unpaid leave for taking care of a sick child, or, for that matter, spending time with children, is a challenge, and often leads to a job loss. And it is still predominantly the mother who carries this responsibility. I don’t know if the same thing is true in Canada. What I do know is that certain posters just salivate at the idea of yet another reason to slam the character ‘Elly’, which used to make me wonder why those posters kept reading if they so disliked the character. Now I know better…

Why is this so shocking to Georgia? Kids play “parent” all the time.

No, Elizabeth, Aunt Georgia means yourself going to school.

Guess that joke would not work for homeschool families.
