1: It’s a rare moment when Connie has the correct hair colour. She almost always has her hair the wrong color of blonde.
2. The other woman is identified in Lynn Johnston’s on-line archive as Gail, named for an old friend of hers. She last appeared in 2013-03-03. At that time she was black, so Gail has had some big changes.
3. This comic strip was originally published on 1989-05-28, but for the reprint they are correcting a mistake in date by publishing close to the birthday that was established for Elly Patterson (August 27).
This was a wonderful ’toon that came along as I was reading that my brother, who has been fighting leukemia, is again hospitalized, and that one of our better leaders in the US has passed away due to aggressive brain cancer. I needed something happy to lift my mood, and this was it…
What happens there, is my dream. My absolute dream, to have friends to celebrate birthdays with! I do have my kids, which would probably be my dream if I didn’t and which is a huge gift, but to know people your age you can be like that with- that’s important, too. I remember turning 40 and wishing for that, and working so hard to see if I can get friends by 50- 3 years left, definitely not there yet but a tiny bit closer. Love how she appreciates it! So many people with friends take them for granted.
Ahhhh, 39. It seems so long ago. A friend of mine has just turned 40 and I told her that she is beginning the best years of her life: “You’re mature and confident, you’ve found your career, your children are old enough to feed themselves, you’re still young and active and you still recognize yourself in the mirror!” Yes, 39 was a great year, turning 40 is fine, too…and you have 10 years until the dreaded 5-0. Amazing how quickly those 10 years will fly by!
My friends and I go to MacDonald’s for muffins and coffee for our birthdays. We sing either “happy birthday” or “for she’s a jolly good fellow”. There are usually a lot of “seniors” at that place for lunch, so everyone joins in…. It is true that after a certain age, say 12 or so, it is not the presents from friends, but the fact that they remembered the day.
