My mom loved to read and took me to the library once a week. However, if she saw me lying around reading a book, she wouldn’t be happy until she’d found some activity for me. I spent a lot of time sneaking around to read.
Because my husband worked from home, our house became a de facto teen center when my son was in high school. When I came home from work, there were usually four or five kids hanging around – playing cards, video games, doing homework, or reading.
The reading happened because I have books of all kinds stuck around in a lot of places. My son told me that his friends enjoyed finding volumes of poetry on the shelf in the hall, sci-fi in the den, science magazines in the bathroom and books on everything from art to architecture in the living room.
One boy was so enamored of the book ‘The Encyclopedia of Mythology’ by Arthur Cotterell, that he asked to borrow it. He brought in less than three days. “That was fast,” I said, “you must have spent your whole weekend reading.” He admitted that he was only partway through the book. “But,” he said, “my mom was so impressed that I was actually reading something, she went to the bookstore and bought me a copy.”
When I was a kid and would get towards the end of the book, my mother would ask me to do something and I would throw a fit. It got to the point where she would check to see where I was IN the book before she asked. :-)
My sister and I were great readers, and we passed it along to our own children. When we went to thee library, thy would just stand and look around in awe for a few moments, and then head off at a gallop.

I started reading a book at bedtime to my youngest son to get him interested in reading. Now he’s hooked!
