Will be several rounds of off and back on before one of them walks away for good. Yeah, there are people who dump a love interest as soon as s/he says the dreaded three words. Suddenly s/he no longer has any appeal. S/he has been conquered, a niche on the bedpost and gone. This is the middle school version, so no bedpost – perhaps in a diary book or digital diary.
Notice this conversation is happening without Lawrence being there, who was just there yesterday. Of course Lawrence is the guy who danced with Martha the last time we saw Martha at Michael’s birthday party in April. The implication is that the guy Martha is “hanging ‘round with” is referring to Lawrence, and that’s why they are having this discussion without him.
I remember being 13 and liking a boy named Dave. We were introduced by a mutual friend. He took me to a movie and, in the theater, said, “I love you.” That terrified me! I called my friend and asked her to break up with him for me. Such is 13.
Women are like streetcars – another one will be along in ten minutes. (I remember a guy singing “I’ve got a new girlfriend” and someone added "But wasn’t she someone else’s old girlfriend?)

Martha really was a backstabber. Anybody is better off without that sort of person.
