Senator Batson D. Belfry was never specifically modeled after one single politician but rather a composite satire of the typical drunken, double talking politician of the day. I think MacNeely got a big charge out of how many people saw their “favorite” pol in the character. Most think the good Senator was a combination of Tip O’Neill and Ted Kennedy (in his later years). To the best of my knowledge Jeff never said.

He always reminds me of Senator Dirksen

Actually I think he is a composite of Dirksen, Tip O’Neil, Kennedy. Bill does not drink enough to make the list.
