“Jemima” is a beautiful-sounding name (at least it is to me), but it’s one of those names that has fallen into disuse because of the manner in which it has become popular. “Elmer” is another one of those names; every time the U.S. Census results come out (some of which are due next month), we start seeing articles covering the popularity of names for babies over the years.
The only way names become popular these days is if they are used in a movie or tv show or by a pop or movie star. And since in all those cases the most unusual or extreme is chosen, we get a raft of unusual or extreme names in the general population.
Those of us who have done any extensive genealogical research can definitely identify with Claudia’s complaint. A large number of the errors in the LDS indexes can be traced to confusing individuals with the same name.
One of my grandmothers was named Clarissa Isabella - and people called her Clara Belle for short. Then along came Disney’s Clarabelle the Cow and Clarabell the Clown, who palled around with Howdy Doody. All of a sudden, my grandmother’s name suddenly changed to just Belle or Bella! It is too bad that so many beautiful names have been ruined by the unfortunate fact that those names were chosen for a fictional character or for an advertising logo or slogan!

On the other side of the ledger, I always liked the name Lois primarily because of Lois Lane!
