This reminds me a lot of the 1950s style humor of I Love Lucy. Several characters in that show would mention how they feared Ricky would hit Lucy because of some of her more extreme schemes. Ricky never does this, but the implication is there that he could and would. I never understood why the threat of a man hitting a woman was considered to be funny.
Who gave a more legitimate story to the cop? The hippie seemed more accusatory like a bully in a playground and Elly seemed to offer more detailed story. If I were the cop, I’d go with Elly. However, with these CCCV cameras, the cop could call in and ask for a quick view of the accident to see if there was a school bus and if the hippie did pass it into the intersection, possibly failing to see Elly considering that the school bus blocked his view. Or that the CCCV caught Elly daydreaming and failing to yield to the hippie. Considering yesterday’s strip, it’s quite possible.
“Officer, I didn’t see him!” is the most common excuse given for collisions, and it’s not a good excuse. If the man’s story is correct, he had the green light, which means he had the right of way. Elly, on the other hand, should have been especially vigilant around the school bus. If her excuse is that he “popped out from behind a school bus”, I pity any children that were offloading at the time!
I’m not sure about Canada, but in the states that is an illegal pass and he is entirely at fault. I should know; I was in an identical accident and I was the passer!
If someone were to answer jokingly answer “not yet” to that question now, there would be a huge investigation, the man’s name would get ruined, and the kids taken for their own protection.
The damage to her car seems to be more on the side, which suggest he hit her, and from yesterday’s strip he appears to have been passing the bus on the right, so it’s plausible she didn’t see him coming.
Police in the U.S. now seem to only come to an accident if there are bodies on the road. Maybe Canadian police still respond like in this strip drawn years ago.
This actually happened. I was driving a friend back to his hotel and we got into an accident. When the police arrived, I didn’t think they would believe our version of the story. I’m a cartoonist and my friend was a comedian!
I believe Elly is at fault. If I’m making a left turn like that I assume someone is coming from the right. I will wait until I’m absolutely sure it’s clear on the right. The other driver does have the right of way.
Obviously, no one in comic-universe has ever heard of the term ‘exaggeration’.Every man, woman and dog has exaggerated at one time or another…….or 100 times. The exaggerator-in-chief was known as Ralph Kramden ( Jackie Gleason). Ellie even does it with a straight face..lol
Believe it or not, hundreds of wives, every day, say the same thing when they do damage to their vehicles. Lolol. And, men exaggerate when they tell their buddies they can’t go out for a beer because their wife will kill them if they do.

I am going to wait to see how Dr. John reacts to the damage on his sports car. Hope he has car insurance with collision coverage to get it repaired.

Speaking of the last panel…A few years ago there was a show on TV called
“Just Shoot Me!” and it was a sit-com…I wonder if they would use such a title nowadays…

Why wasn’t that the cop’s FIRST question?
