If it was meant to be a face palm, it should have fallen the other direction. But, still, it’s keeping in the spirit of the anniversary.

After hurricane Katrina… On a sidewalk in Jackson, Mississippi, as swarms of volunteers work to remove trees that had blocked streets and taken down power lines, a young woman recently moved there from New York is talking by cellphone to her mother back home. (And no, I don’t know how the cell was still functional.)

“No, Mom, you don’t need to worry about me. No, things will be fixed sooner than you might think. Mom… Mom… What you don’t understand is that these men have pickup trucks and towing gear and chainsaws and even if we do need outside help, they’re getting a good headstart on the situation.”

I seldom hear much heartening news about my problematic home state… but this was nice.

When people have a common enemy they pull together – when the don’t they tear each other apart all too often. Nice when they pull together in a crisis – reminds them of how it could be all the time.

Ghosts live on in our hearts and minds… they cannot be outrun, we carry them with us.

Maybe his ghost couldn’t move on because she wouldn’t let him go.

Ghosts seem to reside in people to who see what they consider as portents. Not some hovering blue-glowing ectoplasmic figure. This is so well done one could have filmed it too. Black and White or color. Excellent Ms Lay.
