In strips like this i often wonder if the author is inserting an actual fact from his past into one of his characters. I.E, that Chip Dunham once ran a 10.85 in track.
Amazing how different breeds and individual dogs differ. Our German shepherds never rolled in anything, though they did love running into the lake waves and biting them. Our Flat Coated Retriever loves in the morning to roll in the wet dew laden park grass, but never on anything stinky. Because of this she is never bathed unless she has been boarded and then gets a bath prior to coming home.
Every month when I give Gibbs his flea/heartworm/mite pill, he takes it in his mouth, spits it out, rolls on it, repeats it a couple times, and finally eats it. Who knows why they do the things they do?
Funny story. Kept griping at our one son about his feet. His sox, his sneakers. Horrible. One day, came home from school, plopped down on the couch, kicked his sneakers off. I came in, hosed the room down with Glade air freshener. No hints taken. Then our dog, Balou came in. Sniffed the air. Walked over to John. Sniffed his feet, flopped down on them and started rolling on them. I mean, we just died. Hint taken. Schooled by the hound!

Sad to say. That might have been the friendliest skunk on Earth, too.
