When Bear died, my older dog Buck who survived him mourned him almost 2 days before he really embraced the “Oh boy! I’m the only dog again!”
That lasted a month before I went nuts without Bear and got Wolfey (a rescue who’s owner died). Then Buck was all … “Man! Why did they have to get HIM???!”
My first pair of cats were unrelated females who didn’t get along very well when they were no longer kittens. Yet, 14 years later when I had to have one put down, the other walked around the house for days crying constantly.
Mittens sounds concerned until he knows where Earl is. After that he quickly turns on the catitude, because, well, appearances must be maintained. Dogs? Pah!

Mitty…. You would miss Earl more than you’ll ever admit and you know it!
