Nick, when my Dad would get together with certain of his friends they could gab and gab for hours and not notice anything happening around them. Once when I was a pre-teen the wife of one of those friends asked my mom about our supper and Mom said she would call and have me cook for my kid sister and me. The female friend instead suggested that they order a pizza and then drive it to us (our first time having pizza). They did that, went back, gave another pizza to the kids at that house, sat down with some food for the adults, and the men never realized they had left for maybe three quarters of an hour. When they got home the pizza box totally baffled my father.
Actually, the biggest gossip in the town I grew up in was a different man who really grew the tales he told about others into real sensationalism. These days he’d probably be a prime candidate for a job at a Russian social media propaganda company.
But could teenage girls chat to the exclusion of all else? Well, we sure did when I was young.
