I don’t know about my father rubbing his eyes, but I know he too doesn’t drink, smoke, nor swear. I still don’t know about the eyes, but his father — not a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — did drink, smoke, and I can guarantee swear (never saw nor heard him do so, but that’s what I was told; he died before my birth).
My father never smoked, rarely swore (not more than “damn” or “hell”, anyway), but he always had a beer when he got home from work & sometimes my parents would go out & they’d have a drink; they always had a liquor cabinet as well. However, my dad is the soul of integrity. He was Alderman-At-Large for a few years in our city, until someone actually ran against him. he was too honest to make political promises that he didn’t know if he could keep or not, and his opponent made grand promises, so Dad lost.
My father never smoked, drank, or swore. I am now on medicare, and my 91-year-old dad is still around, using only a cane, and I go to see him at his house every week. There is something to this.

very commendable for his dad (considering he has a daughter like Lucy around the house)!

To keep them from bleeding? (And this was only the 60s/70s, folks! Imagine what the poor man would be doing today…)

Probably, because he can’t believe what he sees anymore.

My dad doesn’t smoke, but he does drink wine and pina colada in moderation and occasionally swears.
