I had one of those proverbial eccentric aunts who’d say, “Let’s eat dessert first. You never know what might happen between now and the end of the meal.”
Over the years, I’ve trotted out that line (in an obviously joking way) at dinners, in restaurants, on picnics, other meal sharing situations. What makes it fun is that so often the idea is immediately and enthusiastically embraced, and we eat dessert first.
Well, there is a certain logic to CB’s response. Perhaps he’s had prior experience with the cook’s skills. But as I was taught by my mother: “Eat it and be thankful.” “Always show gratitude to your host.”

Easy fix: don’t serve dessert at the same time as the rest of the meal. Bring it out after.
