Used to be a bridge column (well, small box) in the daily paper of the small rural town where I grew up. Like CB, I used to pore over it waiting for it to make sense.
I read the bridge column too, but only because it’s opposite the comics page and there are never enough comics for a good…uh, read. You know what I mean — the kind of read you do with one section of the newspaper just in case you run out of toilet paper.
I’m sure that bridge can be a fascinating game, but I was never interested in learning.
Some larger town newspapers have a chess column, which would interest me, but I’ve lived most of my life in smaller towns. When Fischer played Spassky back in 1972, though, our local paper had the games, I think even on page one, although I wouldn’t swear to it now. They still used English descriptive notation, as Americans hadn’t widely adopted algebraic yet. I played through the games in the paper, and I understand they even had them on public television.
“Gee, Charlie Brown, let’s put on some music, get some cold drinks, and I’ll teach you how to play.”
“Okay. Do you want a cold glass of Geritol or prune juice? And for music, how about some swingin’ Mrs. Miller or her husband, Mr. Mitch Miller?”
“I don’t know. That newfangled stuff is pretty raunchy. Do you have any harpsichord or harmonium music? Maybe Gregorian Monk chants!”
“You betcha!”
“Boy, it’s swell being a kid!”
(This is Mrs. Miller. I honestly can’t figure out if this is a put-on for the Durante show or whether this is genuine. She did release a couple of albums.)
My mother was an avid Bridge player and had a whole group that would meet at one of the houses once a month…my siblings and I loved it when it was our turn to host because that was one of the rare occasions we bought fancy snacks and we got the leftovers.
Still could never understand the Bridge column in the paper either. I prefer Euchre…

“Charlie Brown, that is a bridge column, but it’s blue prints for one of the columns in the Brooklyn Bridge. No wonder you don’t understand it.”

…I think I’ve said too much again.

In the Peanutsverse, bridge is for the birds. Just ask Snoopy.

I believe that was Omar Sharif who wrote that column.

Kind of like a George Will op-ed piece.

I feel the same way about Suduko puzzles.
