I learned not to ask the recipient that question. The worst part is, that if they give a wrong answer, you wonder if they’d rather have the gift they guessed rather than the gift you’re giving. I know it’s the thought that counts, but it’s nice if the gift happens to also be something they want.
My younger son’s birthday was coming up and older son was very excited about it. Once as we were going somewhere, he started, “Hey Cubby! Know what we got you for your birthday? We got you a…” Laughing, I put my hand over his mouth and pulled him back inside.
“I get so excited, I just can’t hold it in my mouth,” he bubbled.
A story … my friend had a birthday coming up, and he really wanted something … I don’t remember what, but some sort of relatively expensive widget. His wife bought one for him and of course, didn’t tell him. So, he’s coming up on the birthday and in the spirit of good faith is talking about buying this widget as a birthday gift to himself. She of course is coming up with a variety of reasons why he shouldn’t. Cost, he might not really like it, will be on sale later, etc. Finally, he thinks he’s figured out that she’s stalling, which she is, and thinks he has her trapped and asks – “Did you get me one for my birthday?” To which she responded, clear eyed and with a straight face – “No”. Now of course, she had, and his birthday came around and he got the gift and was super happy. However, in talking to him later his comment was, “she straight up lied to me! I couldn’t even tell!” It might have been the beginning of the end …

Think about your guess, you still have some time left to change it before Charlie Brown’s deadline.

Why would anyone spend a million billion years trying to guess a birthday gift?
