I guess “tricks or treats” is the original phrase, but when I was growing up in the 60s, we never added the “s”. Plus we slurred it to be: “Tricker-Treat”!
Halloween fell on a Sunday once back in the Fifties and my little brother and I missed it because we were in church. We went out the next night and some folks had leftover candy and gave it to us. Halloween candy back then was mostly the penny candy stuff and it wasn’t very good. But I guess we didn’t know any better.

And it’s not for another month, Pig-Pen.

The strip is dated “11-14” in the last panel (the date it was originally published?), which makes this make more sense.

Not sure it’s a trick or treat. Looks more like a homeless child asking for food.

I like Pig-Pen in his ghost costume with dust flying everywhere. “How did you know it was me?”

Not that it really matters, but I wonder when it became singular?
Everyone now says TRICK or TREAT , not Tricks or Treats.
