Ummmmm…he’s already waiting by the new fence (in progress) waiting to catch stray…….trespassers….and, one can almost count on him keeping a tally on how many he caught in the act of climbing over it.
The New York Times reported on May 8, 1962, that the Polaris missile launched by the U.S. Navy hit very near its target. The official assessment: “Right in the pickle barrel.”
I usually didn’t throw the papers. Once, the street was flooded and Old Pete was standing in his yard on the other side, so I rolled the paper up tight and threw it to him. It unrolled in mid flight and fell right in the flood. “Don’t worry about it,” he said. “No trouble,” I said. “I always carry a spare.” The second try got to him.
I retired from a nuclear plant and worked with a bunch of ex-navy nukes. They told some good stories. One was from this guy who had been a missile fire tech. He said they were in the sub off the coast of Scotland and sank a barge somewhere off the coast of Africa in the South Atlantic somewhere. This was back in the early 70’s. (there was more they couldn’t talk about than there was they could talk about too)

Putting the ‘pickle in the barrel’ is an old WW2 bombardier expression for hitting the target.
