At least when I was in, late ’60’s, we had automatic peelers, but they still had to be cleaned. As if Basic Training wasn’t bad enough, 15 hours of KP really topped it off.
While that does count, I am sad to say there is little recognition for the common, every day things we do to help others. You know like stopping at red lights, slowing down at school crossings, etc… Maybe if there was there would be more compliance. I doubt it though.
I deserved a “Medal” for not puking in the soup while serving the Split Green Pea Soup during a typhoon in the South China Sea, and so did a lot of other guys who had to do ’Mess Cook" duty….URP….

I peeled a few potatoes when I was in the Marines. Junior enlisted personnel had thirty days of mess duty every year.

It seems more likely that he was in the kitchen rather than out shooting his fellow soldiers is what saved lives.

Maybe he’d have saved more lives if the’d have let them come down with food poisoning and stay away from the action for awhile…
