In the original meaning of the word, happiness means good things happen to you. “I’m happy” means “I’ve had good hap.” You aren’t responsible for your own, it’s just good fortune. But joy is a state of being, and one can be joyful even if bad things have happened.
To a certain limited extent it can be because of us. Not always, and sometimes we just cannot fathom some things as we should. It is known that humans tend to take risks without knowing just how dangerous it is. They think the risk is lower than it really is. A sort of Dunning~Kruger Effect where too many put themselves in danger literally without understanding it.
