I thought of Horace and his elevator misadventures today, when I pressed the “down” elevator button in my apartment building (the lighted button seldom comes on when pushed, although it does always summon the elevator car). I reflected that I was glad that my elevator acts more predictably than the ones he encounters/uses… Also, I wonder what might happen if he had to use one of those speaking elevators, or one whose buttons are surrounded by circular or square borders that light up very brightly when pushed (the elevators at my local hospital were recently fitted with those)?
