The bigger the ball and the higher the score, the more Americans like the game. So basketball is extremely popular as well as football. Baseball has moderate scores and the ball is rather small.

Soccer would be a lot more popular if the scores routinely broke double digits (even combined) and hockey has hardly a chance. Heck, it doesn’t even use a ball.

For that interjection Linus, you can clean out all the spittoons in the dug out!

Up here North of Boston it’s a tie, well it’s more than a tie when you factor in hockey and basketball.

Not to worry there. The numbers are always erroneous especially the polls which are twisted.

In 1972, when this strip was made, the Miami Dolphins got the first and only perfect season in the NFL, and this was probably a couple of months after that feat. So i think that would elevate American Football’s status.
